The article discusses the history of qanun, a traditional musical instrument, from its emergence until the establishing of the contemporary school of qanun playing, founded by Khachatur Avetisyan. The author introduces Avetisian's life and work as an artist and teacher. In 1978, he founded the Department of Armenian Instruments and Singing at the YSC, which he directed for the end of his life. In 2021, Khachatur Avetisyan's 95th birthday celebrations were held in Gyumri and Yerevan.
