Abstract

The review aims to introduce a broader readership to a work of encyclopedic significance that provides a concise history of international classical music. This work was prepared by the Armenian-American philologist, literary scholar, bibliographer, and musicologist Hovsep Nalbandian. Such an encyclopedic work is important in contemporary society due to its educational function and its influence on the development of science and culture. It is also significant for promoting research on the history of international classical music. The novelty of the work lies in its comprehensive presentation of the diverse community of composers who have held global significance and fame throughout different historical periods. It also highlights the mutual influences of various cultures on one another at different stages of development of different art forms. This work can serve as a valuable knowledge-based resource for composers, conductors, singers, music educators, students, and others.

Author Biography

Naira Valerik Hambardzumyan, Institute of Literature after Manuk Abeghian National Academy of Sciences of the Republic of Armenia

(born August 5, 1974, Yerevan) Graduated from the Department of Armenian Language and Literature, Armenian State Pedagogical University after Khachatur Abovyan in 1996. She holds a PhD in Philology, Associate Professor, literary critic, writer, and a Senior Researcher at the Department of Diaspora Armenian Literature after M. Abeghyan, NAS RA, with numerous achievements in the field of literature and literary criticism. She possesses in-depth knowledge of all periods of Armenian literary and cultural history. In 2015-16, she went to the Faculty of Oriental Languages, SOAS, University of London as a Visiting Scholar. In 2023, she became a beneficiary of the "Staff Training Program" and visited RoyalHolloway, University of London (as a Visiting Academic) and University of West London (as a Guest Academic)for training. In 2021-2023, she successfully supervised the project "Women's Issues in the Western Armenian Literature of the Second Half of the 19th century". Naira Hambardzumyan is the author of 80 articles and 13books. Eight of her scientific papers have been published in reputable scholarly journals indexed in international scientific databases such as Scopus and Web of Science. Her article "Elpis Kesaratsian and the 'Guitar' magazine" was published on January 4, 2024, in the prestigious Taylor & Francis periodical Women's Writing.
