Ghazaros Saryan and the New Phase in the History of the Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory

Abstract

The article presents the life and career of Ghazaros Saryan, composer, People's Artist of the USSR and the Armenian Soviet Socialist Republic, State Prize laureate, Professor. For a quarter of a century he has been the rector of the Yerevan Conservatory, continuing the traditions of Romanos Melikyan, Arshak Adamyan, Anushavan Ter- Ghevondyan, Konstantin Saradzhev, Samson Gasparyan and Grigor Yeghiazaryan. During the years of his leadership, the Conservatory of Yerevan has established the Cabinet of Folk Music Arts, Departments of Chamber Ensemble and Wind Instruments, Department of Post-graduate Studies, and Organ Class.
Ghazaros Saryan was actively engaged in teaching. Prominent Armenian composers, as Tigran Mansuryan, Ruben Sarkisyan, Vardan Adjemyan, Ruben Altunyan, and others have graduated from the composition class under his leadership.
