Abstract

The article is dedicated to the diverse activities of one of the giants in Armenian music theory, professor of YSC Eduard Ruben Pashinyan (1923-2004). Through his innovations he brought Armenian musicology to the international level. The "Universal Super-modal System" proposed by him can stand alongside such generally significant phenomena as the musical systems created by Paul Hindemith and Olivier Messiaen. His research and educational activity left a significant trace in Armenian musicology, with more than fifty years of teaching music theory and creating the first national test-books on course of harmony and polyphony.
Eduard Pashinyan also introduced innovations other than musicology, such as ophthalmology, mathematics, and some fields of knowledge.

Author Biography

Ruzanna Vachagan Stepanyan, Komitas State Conservatory of Yerevan

Musicologist, PhD of Arts, Docent, 1992-1997 studied in the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas, majoring in Musicology (thesis supervisor Doctor of Arts, Prof. Eduard Pashinyan). 1992-2002 pursued postgraduate studies, Musicology program, in the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas. 2004 defended her thesis on “The aspects of the functional harmony in the musicology of the XXth century” and got her degree PhD of Arts (thesis supervisor PhD of Arts, Prof. Eduard Pashinyan). In 2009 was awarded the title of Docent. In 1997-2019 worked in the Music College after Romanos Meliqyan, as a teacher of the music theory subjects.2015-2019 worked in the RA Ministry of Culture, as a Cultural Education Coordinator. Since1998 teaches in the Yerevan State Conservatory after Komitas. Since 2009 she is a Docent in the Music Theory department, since 2018 Head of the same department.
