Abstract

The article explores the history of establishment and key milestones of the Department of Composition of Yerevan Komitas State Conservatory. The article highlights the peculiarities of pedagogical principles of A. L. Stepanyan, S. V. Barkhudaryan, V. G. Talyan, G. I. Eghiazaryan, E. M. Mirzoyan, Gh. M. Saryan.

Author Biography

Georgi Shmavon Gyodakyan

12.08.1928 Leninakan - 20.12.2015, Yerevan. Musicologist, Doctor of Arts (2007), Professor (1997), Honored Artist of the RA (1980). Member of the Composers' Union of Armenia since 1959, in 1973-1991 - Secretary of the Board. Member of the Communist Party of the Arm SSR (1971-1991). In 1951 he graduated from the Department of Music Theory and Composition at YSC (class of G. G. Tigranov, PhD, Doctor of Arts) and in 1952 graduated from the Piano Department (class of G. V. Sarajev). In 1956 he completed postgraduate studies at the AS of the Arm SSR, and continued his studies at the Department of Music Theory at Moscow State Conservatory, under B. M. Yarustovski's supervision. Since 1957 G. Gyodakyan has been working at the Departments of Theory and History of Arts at the AS of the ArmSSR (Institute of Arts, 1958). He became Scientific Secretary and member of the Academic Council of the Institute of Arts (1960), Head of the Music Department in 1965-2015, Deputy Director of Music Department in 1979-2005 and Advisor to the Director in 2005-2015. Since 1973 G. Gyodakyan taught at YSC. In 1962-1983 he was member of the Artistic Council of A. Spendiaryan State Academic Opera and Ballet Theater. Member of the Board of Editors of the scientific periodicals "Sovetakan Arvest" (1973-1989), "Lraber" (1982-2001), Music Encyclopedic Dictionary (Moscow, since 1993), journal "Musical Armenia" (1998-2015) and Armenian Encyclopedia (1995-1997). G. Gyodakyan was author of a number of works and monographs, including "Romanos Melikyan. Life and Work", 1960; "Essays on the History of Armenian Art", V.1; "Essay on the History of Armenian Music", as co-author, 1963; "Tigran Chukhajian and His Arshak the Second", 1971; "Komitas", 2000; "Pages From the History of Armenian Music", 2009; "Komitas" (Russian), 1969; "Towards the Development of Armenian Classical Music", (Russian), 2006; "Komitas", 2014. Gyodakyan wrote numerous articles on the history and theory of music, published in a variety of scientific journals and collections of articles in Armenia, Georgia, Uzbekistan, Russia, and Germany. In 1997-2006 he also prepared the publication of the volumes VII-XIV of Komitas' works. In 1973 he became a laureate of Armenian Lenin Komsomol Prize; in 2003 he was awarded Hakob Meghapart Commemorative Medal and Certificate of Merit from the NAS of the RA. In 2008 he became laureate of the award ceremony of World Armenian Congress and the Union of the Armenians of Russia. in 2009 he was awarded Gold Medal of the Ministry of Culture of RA, and in 2011 - Movses Khorenatsi Medal.
